The eponymous character introduced by this British team owes a large debt to Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are. When Mouse meets Fox in the "deep dark wood," he invents a story about the gruffalo, described very much like Sendak's fearsome quartet of wild thingsA"He has terrible tusks, and terrible claws, and terrible teeth in his terrible jaws." The gullible fox runs away when Mouse tells him that the gruffalo's favorite food is roasted fox. "Silly old Fox!" says Mouse, "Doesn't he know?/ There's no such thing as a gruffalo!" Owl and Snake follow suit until, with a turn of the page, Mouse runs into the creature he has imagined.

Pat the Beastie: A Pull-and-Poke Book

Pat the Beastie: A Pull-and-Poke Book by Workman Publishing Company

Posted date: as of 2012-10-27 - Details
Buy from amazon.com

In this spiky, acid-colored parody of Edith Kunhardt's gentle classics Pat the Bunny and Pat the Cat , Paul and Judy play pranks on their patient-seeming pet Beastie (a green-haired, scaly, dragon-like creature) and offer readers the chance to do the same. After Paul "jiggles Beastie's eyes" (pop-ups) and torments the modest animal by lifting a bubble-gum-pink shower curtain (cut from material) to peer at him in the bathtub; Judy "pokes Beastie's worm boogers" (a pair of wiggly rubber centipedes, one green, the other orange). A miniature book (written and illustrated by the beleaguered Beastie himself) attached to one spread contains a cautionary tale, while reproaches and warnings uttered by a toothy bird and dog duo steer the reader toward humane behavior. But the wit here is misfired--four-year-olds may laugh at playing peek-a-boo with shower curtains, but the sophistication of the parody genre will probably elude them. On the other hand, older children may well eschew the book's format, while adults are likely to turn up their noses at the gross-out humor. Ages 4-up. Starred Review. PreSchool-Grade 1—Well-known for her captivating board books, Patricelli brings her simple text and crayon colors to the next age level. As an adult pushes a pigtailed girl in a striped sweater and socks on a swing, the child calls out: "Higher! Higher!" The ride gradually takes her from a giraffe's-eye view, to a mountaintop, to an airplane, and finally high enough to trade high fives with a one-eyed, green alien who floats on her own swing among the stars. The pictures then regress to a vantage point that allows readers to review the stages of her upward climb all at once, then return to the playground for a hug and the final word: "Again!" The repetitive text is ideal for new readers, and the cartoon paintings, though spare, provide plenty of room for imagination. An excellent choice to share at storytime.—Gay Lynn Van Vleck, Henrico County Library, Glen Allen, VA Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. Gyo Fujikawa (1908-1999) made a career in the advertising world and also enjoyed a lengthy stint at the Walt Disney Studios where she designed the large book version of Fantasia. In 1957, she illustrated her first picture book, A Child's Garden of Verses. Many others followed, some of which she also wrote. Babies, published in 1963, stands as a landmark: it was the first children's book to depict infants of all races and nations sharing growing experiences. Fujikawa's books have been translated into 17 languages and are read in more than 22 countries. --This text refers to the Board book edition.

Pooh Goes Visiting Mini Board Book

Pooh Goes Visiting Mini Board Book by Dutton Juvenile

Kindergarten-Grade 6-A.A. Milne's Pooh gets royal treatment in this dramatization of six stories from Winnie-the-Pooh. Four accomplished actors provide the voices and narration in which Pooh seeks honey, goes visiting, nearly catches a woozle, helps Eeyore find his tail, saves Piglet from a flood, and is the star of a party thrown by Christopher Robin. The voices are clear and consistent, and the storytelling is delightful, making this truly a "theater for the ears." Sound effects and music add interest without distracting from the fun. This professional production is a joy to hear.Teresa Bateman, Brigadoon Elementary School, Federal Way, WACopyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Fox in Socks (Dr. Seuss: Green Back Books)

Fox in Socks (Dr. Seuss: Green Back Books) by HarperCollins Publishers

"This Fox is a tricky fox. He'll try to get your tongue in trouble." Dr. Seuss gives fair warning to anyone brave enough to read along with the Fox in Socks, who likes to play tongue-twisting games with his friend Mr. Knox. "Here's an easy game to play. Here's an easy thing to say.... New socks. Two socks. Whose socks? Sue's socks." But Mr. Fox Socks isn't about to let Knox off so easy. Soon Goo-Goose is choosing to chew chewy gluey blue goo, while tweetle beetles battle with paddles in a puddle (in case you were wondering, that's called a "tweetle beetle puddle paddle battle"). Mr. Knox gets exasperated: "I can't blab such blibber blubber! My tongue isn't made of rubber." But he catches on to the game before it's all through. One of Seuss's best, this must-read-aloud classic is guaranteed to get many giggles out of readers young and old. (Ages 4 to 8) --Paul Hughes --This text refers to the Library Binding edition.

Hippos Go Berserk

Hippos Go Berserk by Little Simon

Posted date: as of 2012-10-24 - Details
Buy from amazon.com

The well-loved Sandra Boynton wrote this tribute to silliness in 1977, inspiring generations of the very young to learn to count. Lively, cute new illustrations complement this edition, with big numbers (one through nine, and nine through one) boldly placed on the corner of each page. The sturdy board book will withstand lots of eager counting fingers, and maybe even a berserk hippo or two. Boynton's familiar style can be seen in scads of other delightfully nonsensical titles, including Barnyard Dance! and Moo, Baa, La La La!. (Ages 3 to 7) --Emilie Coulter How dull, to be one hippo all alone... until the one calls two other hippos on the phone. Soon three more hippos are at the door, bringing along another four. Before the night is through, a houseful of hippos (and one beast) has joined the one hippo for a boisterous bash. All through the hippo night, Hippos play with great delight. But at the hippo break of day, The hippos all must go away.

Five Little Monkeys with Nothing to Do

Five Little Monkeys with Nothing to Do by HMH Books

Posted date: as of 2012-10-23 - Details
Buy from amazon.com

PreSchool-Grade 2-When five bored little monkeys complain of nothing to do, their mother gladly enlists their help in getting ready for Grandma's visit. In a great scurry, they clean their room, scrub the bathroom, beat the rug, and pick berries for dessert. Unfortunately, when they turn to readying themselves, they undo all their good work and muss and muddy the entire house. Wordless final pictures show them cleaning again. This is Christelow's fourth book about these little monkeys, and it's not quite as much fun as the author's earlier efforts, no doubt because of the "housework is never done" subject matter. The ink-and-wash cartoon illustrations, however, are lively and offer much that will amuse, such as each little monkey pointing in blame at another. This book can be enjoyed one-on-one or at story hour, and all who read it will gain more appreciation for whoever does the cleaning at home.Meg Stackpole, Rye Free Reading Room, NYCopyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
