Hop on Pop (Bright & Early Board Books(TM))

Recommended Age: Birth - 4 years. First published in 1963, Hop on Pop remains a perennial favorite when it comes to teaching kids to read. Here, as in most of his extensive body of work, Dr. Seuss creates uncomplicated, monosyllabic rhymes to foster learning and inspire children to read. But what was radical about this little book at the time of publication (and what makes it still compelling today) is Seuss's departure from the traditionally dull pictures and sentences used in reading primers. In contrast, the illustrations here are wild and wonderful, and the accompanying language, while simple, is delightfully silly.

    The Hat

    The Hat by Putnam Juvenile

    Buy from amazon.com

This magnificently illustrated companion book to artist (and hedgehog owner) Jan Brett's classic The Mitten was the winner of the prestigious 1998 Boston Globe-Horn Book Award. Young readers can spend hours with this one short book, poring over the pleasing, spirited details of Brett's trademark picture borders. Throughout, Lisa can be seen in these artful frames, making preparations for the cold Scandinavian winter, never realizing that her clothesline is becoming more line than clothes. If it were possible to wrap oneself up in these warm, cozy illustrations, readers would be set for the winter. (Ages 4 to 8) --Emilie Coulter Hedgie the hedgehog discovers the wisdom of the adage, "Don't go poking your nose where it doesn't belong" only after curiosity gets this prickly fellow in a pickle. When Lisa's red and white woolen stocking blows off the clothesline, Hedgie finds it and sticks his nose inside, only to discover his prickles prevent him from pulling out of it. Soon all the farm animals are coming around to chuckle at silly Hedgie's stocking hat. But in the end, nimble-witted Hedgie gets the last laugh.

Reviewed with Olivier Dunrea's Ollie the Stomper.

PreS. The creator of the Gossie books introduces a new sibling for Gossie and Gertie--Ollie the gosling, stubborn, impatient, and endearing. His independent streak becomes obvious in Ollie as his sisters try to coax him out of his egg. It's only after they lose interest that the ornery little goose breaks through the shell. Ollie the Stomper picks up soon after. Though just recently hatched, Ollie is already feeling left out. His sisters have colorful boots, and Ollie wants some, too. Each sister gives him one of her boots, but after stomping around the barnyard, the fickle Ollie decides that the weather is too hot for footwear but perfect for a swim. Both books feature bright, uncluttered ink-and-watercolor illustrations and simple, repetitive text.

King Bidgood's in the Bathtub (Caldecott Honor Book)

King Bidgood's in the Bathtub (Caldecott Honor Book) by Sandpiper

Posted date: as of 2012-11-24 - Details
    Buy from amazon.com

Grade 1-4 In this humorously original tale, various members of the Court, all clothed in elaborate Elizabethan dress, try to dislodge the King from his bubbly tub. Instead they are drawn into it with him, to "do battle" with toy ships and warriors; to eat a lavish feast; to fish and to dance. It is the young page who finds a solution, finally, by pulling the plug. Much of the delight is in Don Wood's meticulous oil paintings, which juxtapose the starched, overdressed, "shocked" demeanor of the Court with the King's twinkling, sensual, even lascivious manner. Minute details in the paintings emphasize this contrast; the red-haired naked King frolics while the fully-clothed courtiers emerge dripping from the bath with literally all their starch taken out. A voluptuous book whose rich range of colors and tones reflect the passing hours of the day. As in the Woods' Napping House (HBJ, 1984), the few simple words of text per large, well-designed page invite storytellingbut keep the group very small, so the children can be close enough to pore over the brilliant, robust illustrations. Charlie Cook's Favorite Book

Charlie Cook's Favorite Book by Dial

Posted date: as of 2012-11-24 - Details
    Buy from amazon.com

Kindergarten-Grade 2–A boy curls up in a cozy chair to enjoy his favorite book, whereupon readers are whisked away on a trip through different types of literature. The story assumes a book within a book format, as a turn of the page takes youngsters inside Charlie's pirate adventure. Here the layout resembles an open novel, with the title Shiver Me Timbers emblazoned across the top. A pirate digs up a treasure chest that contains–you guessed it–a book. Another page turn reveals that it is a collection of fairy tales, as Baby Bear finds Goldilocks in his bed reading his favorite story about a knight and a dragon. This pattern continues until the action returns to Charlie, still in his armchair, now surrounded by all of the characters. The spreads cleverly reflect the featured tales, and the endpapers show all of the volumes lined up on a shelf. Unfortunately, the loosely rhyming text is awkward to read aloud and the transitions often seem forced. Youngsters are ultimately left looking for more substance to accompany Scheffler's humorous, brightly colored cartoons.

Starred Review. PreSchool-Grade 2–The farmyard is aflutter as the cows that type return with new correspondence. Youngsters will soon realize that they invited all of their animal friends, including Duck, to a picnic. The alphabetical adventure begins as the Animals awake and ends 25 letters later with them peacefully snoring Zzzzzzzz…. In between there is plenty of fun as Duck pulls the Mice munching in a red wagon, Rain threatens, and X marks the picnic spot. Once again, this author-illustrator team works in perfect harmony to create a colorful and funny story with highly expressive animals. It's sure to delight Duck's many fans, and there's a distinct possibility that this adventure will have more appeal to preschoolers than the original story that inspired it.–Maura Bresnahan, High Plain Elementary School, Andover, MA Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. word ennunciation..Phonics.english.Beginning reading.Juvenile Fiction Rhyming. "Did you ever fly a kite in bed? Did you ever walk with ten cats on your head?" Such are the profound, philosophical queries posed in this well-loved classic by Theodor "Dr. Seuss" Geisel. While many rhymes in this couplet collection resemble sphinx-worthy riddles, Seuss's intention is clear: teach children to read in a way that is both entertaining and educational. It matters little that each wonderful vignette has nothing to do with the one that follows. (We move seamlessly from a one-humped Wump and Mister Gump to yellow pets called the Zeds with one hair upon their heads.
