Curious George Seasons (CGTV Spin-the-Wheel Board Book)

Price: $6.29 (as of 2014-01-01 - Details)

Hans Augusto Rey was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1898. As a child, he spent much of his free time in that city's famous Hagenbeck Zoo drawing animals. After serving in the army during World War I, he studied philology and natural science at the University of Hamburg. He then married Margret Rey and they moved to Montmartre for four years. The manuscript for the first Curious George books was one of the few items the Reys carried with them on their bicycles when they escaped from Paris in 1940. Eventually, they made their way to the United States, and Curious George was published in 1941. Curious George has been published in many languages, including French, German, Japanese, Afrikaans, and Norwegian. Additional Curious George books followed, as well as such other favorites as CECILY G. AND THE NINE MONKEYS and FIND THE CONSTELLATIONS.

PreS-Gr 1-Rhythmic verse and lively illustrations showcase autos of every color, size, style, and speed. "Cars and cars and/ yet still MORE cars!/Millions, billions, cars-GALORE cars!" Just when readers think there couldn't be any more variations, the text revs up with a new characteristic or action. The rhyme, similar to Patricia Hubbell's Cars: Rushing! Honking! Zooming! (Marshall Cavendish, 2006), cruises smoothly for the most part, changing from slow to fast lane with only a few bumps. The illustrator's familiar cartoon style easily matches the text. Crisp, clean lines and bright colors pop against the white background, while black traffic-filled roads crisscross and loop around the pages. Readers will eagerly search for and find every vehicle mentioned.

King Bidgood's in the Bathtub

King Bidgood's in the Bathtub

Price: $13.99 (as of 2013-12-31 - Details)

Grade 1-4 In this humorously original tale, various members of the Court, all clothed in elaborate Elizabethan dress, try to dislodge the King from his bubbly tub. Instead they are drawn into it with him, to "do battle" with toy ships and warriors; to eat a lavish feast; to fish and to dance. It is the young page who finds a solution, finally, by pulling the plug. Much of the delight is in Don Wood's meticulous oil paintings, which juxtapose the starched, overdressed, "shocked" demeanor of the Court with the King's twinkling, sensual, even lascivious manner. Minute details in the paintings emphasize this contrast; the red-haired naked King frolics while the fully-clothed courtiers emerge dripping from the bath with literally all their starch taken out. A voluptuous book whose rich range of colors and tones reflect the passing hours of the day. As in the Woods' Napping House (HBJ, 1984), the few simple words of text per large, well-designed page invite storytellingbut keep the group very small, so the children can be close enough to pore over the brilliant, robust illustrations. I Like Myself!

I Like Myself!

Price: $8.63 (as of 2013-12-28 - Details)

PreSchool-Grade 2–This curly haired African-American moppet really likes herself. No matter what she does, wherever she goes, or what others think of her, she likes herself because, as she says, "I'm ME!" Catrow's watercolor, ink, and pencil illustrations bring even more humor to the funny verse. The brightly colored art and rhymes are reminiscent of Dr. Seuss's work with their quirky absurdity, especially the full spread of the child and her highly unusual bicycle. Even with "…stinky toes/or horns protruding from my nose," her dog loves her unconditionally. She is so full of joy that readers will love her, too–even when she has purple polka-dotted lips. Titles such as Jamie Lee Curtis's I'm Gonna Like Me (2002) and Kathi Appelt's Incredible Me! (2003, both HarperCollins) have a similar theme, but the main characters are Caucasian. A great addition.–Elaine Lesh Morgan, Multnomah County Library, Portland, OR Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. Duck in the Truck

Duck in the Truck

Price: (as of 2013-12-26 - Details)

"This is the Duck driving home in a truck./ This is the track which is taking him back." So begins this deliciously percussive rhyming story of a feathered truck driver who becomes mired in muck and the three animal Good Samaritans (a frog, a sheep and a goat) who try to help him. As Alborough's (It's the Bear; My Friend Bear) words roll out in an infectious, hard-hitting beat with more than a few rhythmic surprises, he metes out his bold pictures in perfect accompaniment. A triptych of vignettes creates a slow-motion effect as the truck first strikes a rock, is then shown aloft, and finally hits the muck; close-up spreads focus on the exasperated characters attempting to budge the vehicle. With light-hearted tension, wry characterizations and lots of squishy mud, this tale makes for a quacking good read-aloud. Ages 3-6. (Feb.) Ollie the Stomper (Gossie & Friends)

Ollie the Stomper (Gossie & Friends)

Price: $6.25 (as of 2013-12-25 - Details)

Reviewed with Olivier Dunrea's Ollie.

PreS. The creator of the Gossie books introduces a new sibling for Gossie and Gertie--Ollie the gosling, stubborn, impatient, and endearing. His independent streak becomes obvious in Ollie as his sisters try to coax him out of his egg. It's only after they lose interest that the ornery little goose breaks through the shell. Ollie the Stomper picks up soon after. Though just recently hatched, Ollie is already feeling left out. His sisters have colorful boots, and Ollie wants some, too. Each sister gives him one of her boots, but after stomping around the barnyard, the fickle Ollie decides that the weather is too hot for footwear but perfect for a swim. Both books feature bright, uncluttered ink-and-watercolor illustrations and simple, repetitive text. Their small trim size and manageable text make them just right for beginning readers. Preschoolers will relate to Ollie's point of view and delight in his humorous reactions to the new world he's discovering. Jennifer LockeCopyright © American Library Association. Five Little Monkeys Sitting in a Tree

Five Little Monkeys Sitting in a Tree

Price: (as of 2013-12-24 - Details)

PreSchool-K-- The irrepressible crew from Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed (Clarion, 1989) returns in this version of a traditional hand rhyme. The familiar chant tells of five foolish monkeys who are eaten when they tease a hungry crocodile. Christelow chooses a more lighthearted approach, illustrating it in sunny-colored pastels outlined in ink. She places the rhyme in a picnic setting; while the mother dozes, the little monkeys scamper out on a limb and fearlessly call to a crocodile, "You can't catch me!" But the crocodile's jaws snap, and one by one the monkeys disappear. Bright patches of clothing and pairs of little eyes among the leaves will signal perceptive listeners that all is well. Children will enjoy being in on the secret that even the mother monkey, awakened by all the noise, doesn't know. In the upbeat ending, all the children pop out of their hiding places, safe and sound. Some readers may question why the mother snoozes, leaving her brood to look after themselves, or why she doesn't come to their aid when she thinks they are in danger. The intended audience, however, will overlook these lapses of logic as they delight in the mischief-making--a humorous exaggeration of their own antics. --Carey Ayres, Port Washington Public Library, NYCopyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to the Library Binding edition.

Underwear!

Underwear!

Price: $7.19 (as of 2013-12-24 - Details)

An idea with built-in kid-appeal: tell a story about underwear and bring in an artist to add lots of funny touches to each pair of boxer shorts. But one section of the story is a rather contrived morsel about friends who make a grumpy buffalo laugh by making him say aloud the word "underwear." Much more fun is the part when grassland animals Orfo the Orangutan and Zachary the Zebra attend the "World's Greatest Grassland Underwear Fair" and stock up on their favorite styles. And best of all are Munsinger's pictures of them wearing all those bright and witty styles at once. Ages 3-7.
