Bubble Trouble

Bubble Trouble

Price: (as of 2014-02-01 - Details)

Starred Review. PreSchool-Grade 2—A truckload of trouble and mountains of mayhem ensue when young Mabel blows a bubble that enfolds her baby brother and carries him aloft. He is pursued by his frantic mother and sister, "crumpled Mr. Copple and his wife," "feeble Mrs. Threeble," "Greville Gribble," the chapel choir, and other townsfolk. The text floats in waves along with the bouncing baby across the energetic watercolor and cut-paper spreads. Dressed in stripes and plaids, nightshirts and jogging suits, the crowd sprints along through backyards and gardens, gesticulating wildly as the smiling infant floats by. Eventually, the rescuers form a human ladder to reach him. But Abel, "a rascal and a rebel," performs a dastardly deed with his slingshot and the people watch in horror as the baby plummets through the air. It takes three page turns for readers to reach the delightful resolution of this perilous predicament. There is no mistaking the baby's happy landing as his smiling face and waving arms and feet fill the spread. This tale, with its over-the-top silliness, is a storyhour gem. And with some practice, the rhyme, alliterative phrases, and names will fall trippingly off the tongue. Fabulous fun!—Marianne Saccardi, formerly at Norwalk Community College, CT Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

"We're going on a bear hunt. / We're going to catch a big one. / What a beautiful day! / We're not scared." So begins Michael Rosen's award-winning read-aloud romp We're Going on a Bear Hunt. In this lovely boxed gift edition illustrated by Helen Oxenbury, a small paperback version of the book is packaged with the softest, most fabulous little brown bear we've ever seen. Reenacting "Splash splosh! Splash splosh! Splash splosh!" across the river is much more fun with an actual bear on hand. (Ages 4 and older) --This text refers to the Board book edition.

Max's Bath (Max and Ruby)

Max's Bath (Max and Ruby)

Price: (as of 2014-01-29 - Details)

Where would messy Max be without his older sister Ruby? Certainly not very clean, as evidenced in this amusing tale of young Max's somewhat disastrous bath. Of course, Max is the kind of active bunny who wears everything he eats. As his sister tells him, "You're still hungry, Max, because your sandwich isn't in you, it's all over you." And while Ruby tries her best to clean him up, Max is not quite with the program. When he attempts to eat orange sherbet and grape juice in the bathtub, fascinating complications unfold. Will anyone come out clean in this one? This delightful story is just one in Rosemary Wells's series of eight sturdy Max board books--including Max's Toys and Max's Bedtime--each measuring seven inches square and plastic coated to withstand lots of loving handling. The bright, strongly rendered line and wash drawings perfectly capture the essence of Max, a stellar example of the indomitable will of toddlers.

Happy Halloween, Curious George tabbed board book

Happy Halloween, Curious George tabbed board book

Price: $7.19 (as of 2014-01-29 - Details)

Hans Augusto Rey was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1898. As a child, he spent much of his free time in that city's famous Hagenbeck Zoo drawing animals. After serving in the army during World War I, he studied philology and natural science at the University of Hamburg. He then married Margret Rey and they moved to Montmartre for four years. The manuscript for the first Curious George books was one of the few items the Reys carried with them on their bicycles when they escaped from Paris in 1940. Eventually, they made their way to the United States, and Curious George was published in 1941. Curious George has been published in many languages, including French, German, Japanese, Afrikaans, and Norwegian. Additional Curious George books followed, as well as such other favorites as CECILY G. AND THE NINE MONKEYS and FIND THE CONSTELLATIONS.

I Love You Stinky Face

I Love You Stinky Face

Price: (as of 2014-01-26 - Details)

PreSchool-Grade 1. A child tucked into bed delays going to sleep, needing reassurance of her mother's love. The youngster asks, "Would you still love me....if I were a big scary ape?" or "a super smelly skunk" or "a terrible meat-eating dinosaur," and the list continues. No matter what horrible creature is imagined, Mama says she will always love and care for her child. Warm pastel drawings sweetly illustrate the story; the imaginary creatures are appealing rather than frightening. Reminiscent of Margaret Wise Brown's The Runaway Bunny (HarperCollins, 1942) and Kady Denton's Would They Love a Lion? (Kingfisher, 1995), this is a good choice for storytime or one-on-one sharing.

The Foot Book is a delightful tribute to the diverse and multifaceted world of feet. Not merely a realm of ankles, arches, and toes--as this self-proclaimed "Wacky Book of Opposites" attests--the podiatry province welcomes all kinds: "Slow feet/Quick feet/Well feet/Sick feet." Dr. Seuss has put his best foot forward here, in a whimsical approach to showcasing opposites. Wet feet contrast dry feet, and low feet contrast high feet. Though hot feet and cold feet aren't specifically referenced, we get the sense that those are okay too. As usual, the rhymes are quick and quirky, and Seuss's illustrations will knock kids' socks off.

    Price: $12.56 (as of 2014-01-24 - Details)

Assorted Colors. One by one, 10 friendly characters?from a pig to a toad to a mouse?fall in step with one another in this lively sequential rhyme. The introductions start with "a tiny bug" (an ant, actually) who "went for a walk./ He met a cat and stopped to talk." Bug and cat soon encounter a green crocodile, this threesome meets a bee, and so on. Bond, illustrator of If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, effectively plans her story's progression. Readers can easily name and number the members of the group, particularly when seven of them sneak into a boy's house ("tippy-toeing on fourteen feet"), fix themselves a snack and peek around the corner of a door so that just their 14 eyes are visible. Bond then steers the animals toward a midday nap; the book serves double duty as counting game and bedtime story. Although the author/artist doesn't break new ground with her cheery watercolor palette and prankishly smiling characters, she knows the needs of her audience?and meets them handsomely. A childlike charmer. Ages 3-up. Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.
